Skatergirls at Dufferin Grove Skatepark

I’ve written about Babes Brigade in Toronto several times.  I’m always impressed by their positive vibes & the events they host & participate in.

Screen shot 2016-07-13 at 10.10.35 AM

A few days ago they teamed by up with some skater moms – Silvie Varone & Michelle Webb Deveaux to encourage and teach other girls about skateboarding at Duffern Grove Skatepark in Toronto.

Below are some highlights of the day.  Huge thanks to all the girls who support & encourage #girlscanskate.  By sharing your pictures & stories you encourage more girls to try & keep skateboarding.

Girls can benefit from skateboarding.  It’s sport, art, exercise, transportation, rolling yoga & a self-confidence builder.

Thanks also to Vans Canada who sponsored this event.  More girls skateboard when they see stylish girls skateboarding & get encouragement.

Thinking about Canada

Since I can remember my Plan B has always been pack up & move to Canada.  Even before I could skateboard – I was moving to Canada where I truly believe things are near perfect.

Thanks to the blog – I actually know people in Canada.  Like  _chickflip_ Canadian skater girls spreading the love of skateboarding from Vancouver to the world.

It Takes a Village but it Starts with 1 Person

Screen shot 2016-04-14 at 8.52.23 AM

Maggiemech shares this picture taken by imagemaven.com with the caption:

It takes a village to raise a child…. Or to teach someone how to drop in (the goal of the year)!;-) It was so great to experience all the support from the skate community! Help& advise came from many directions and so did the hi-fives and pep talks! It was awesome!! I would love for anyone to experience that feeling!

Yes – it might take a village – but it can start with just one person.  I met imagemaven aka Melene in February 2016 when I was writing about Canadian skater girls.  She has incredible photo/video skills and through those skills and her encouragement – I see a village that’s formed and growing.

Screen shot 2016-04-14 at 8.56.30 AM

What I see happening in Calgary is what I wish for the world.  Skateboarding is sport & art it’s meant to be shared – more girls do skate as they see girls skateboarding & get encouragement!

thanks imagemaven – you are 100% skater & inspirer

Jackalopes are real – Happy Easter

I love Canada and soon it will be  Jackalope time  in Montreal – August 19- 21st.

Screen shot 2016-02-28 at 1.24.27 PM

Jackalope is just one of the many events that World Cup Skateboarding organizes.  Below is my  interview with Don Bostick President of World Cup Skateboarding since 1993.

SF:  I’ve heard people say skateboarding is a fad – goes up & down in popularity.  Is that what you’ve seen in the last 20 plus years?  And if so why does that happen?

Don:  Back in the early days and I mean the early days of the 60’s when I started skateboarding, it was often referred to as a fad. It appeared and disappeared as most fads do overnight. However, for the past 40 years, skateboarding has enjoyed good and bad times in a roller coaster type of fashion. About every 10 years, things are good with companies thriving and the number of skateboarders go up. Then for different reasons, business slows down and the number of skaters fall off. Basically, kids grow up and discover girls, driving owning a car and getting a job, etc. – life changes.. However, the big difference in the last 10 years is the number of returning skaters! Check out the skateparks and it’s become a family thing now. So many dads and moms are skating with their kids; boys and girls. The other difference is the influence of long boarding, cruising and just skating for transportation.

Because of all the TV exposure skateboarding has received in the past 20 years via the X Games, Gravity Games, Dew Tour, Street League, MTV Sports Festival, Vans Triple Crown, and more, new skaters have been drawn into skating that might not have been by just the skate media, etc. Then add in social media, skating is everywhere world wide!

SF:  Overall do you think there’s been a steady increase in the number of girls skateboarding even if the total number of skaters has decreased?

Just based on what I’ve seen around the world, the number of girls skateboarding is definitely on the rise. Pre teens, teens, mature girls and even older moms are out there doing it. Girls of all ages are really enjoying skateboarding. They are also enjoying all the different forms of skateboarding from skating the parks, the streets and cruising on longboards as well. On my trip to Colorado for the Winter Dew Tour, I saw a girl traveling with a downhill skateboard set. A totally specialized low gravity deck about 34 “ long, 10” wide, with cut outs for the 72 mm wheels, etc. She had it attached to her backpack. As an old downhiller, I thought it was super cool to see. There is so much more support for the girls, which I believe is huge help in attracting girls to skateboarding. It’s a special time in skateboarding for girls, with all the new skate companies targeting the female market and special events out there giving opportunities to the girls, like the Vans Girls Combi Pool Classic and Exposure! Thanks to all the ladies over the years paving the way, making today’s atmosphere even possible!

SF:  I see so many skate parks opening up around the world – I think that’s a good sign for the future of skateboarding – do you?

Yes, I do think it’s a good sign for the future of skateboarding. Internationally, skateparks have blown up in the past few years! I’m not sure of the number of parks around the world, but they are certain up from the number of skateparks, say 5 or 10 years ago.

The biggest deal and change is that of number of parks are free and open to the public! Here in the United States, everything changed once the liability laws changed. We’re now in tune with the rest of the world and parks are everywhere.

Parks breed new skaters and maintain older skaters, which is why they are important! With parks opening up around the world, skateboarding’s future is secured. Similar to having basketball courts for soccer fields.

SF:  If you had one wish for skateboarding – mine is to see more girls of all ages & levels skateboarding for fun – what would your wish be?

I like that! I also feel your wish is already coming true, just based what I’ve seen in recent years for the number of girls now skating around the world.

My one wish for skateboarding would be that we weren’t so fragmented as an industry and dare I say as a sport? There are so many different aspects of skateboarding. Everyone is different and what attracts them. From kick flipping down a double stair to racing downhill at 50 miles an hour to skating backyard pools, cruising the beach or making the first 1440 on the mega ramp, it’s all skateboarding! I would just like to see everyone respect each other and their style of skating! Yeah, that’s my wish!

Screen shot 2016-02-28 at 1.28.35 PM

That’s an awesome wish – what are your wishes for skateboarding?  Please keep sharing your pictures – seeing is believing – & yes Jackalope’s must be real see above & below.  Happy Easter!

Sub_Urban Riot – Stylish & Thoughtful Clothes

It may only be March but it is time to plan the summer wardrobe. I have to be ready for not just going to the beach but helping out at skateboard and ice skating camps. Plus Clash at Clairemont and Coachella are just a few of the events coming up so here’s a tip on how to keep it stylish on & off the board!

Screen shot 2016-03-08 at 10.00.20 AM

First up this season I caught up with Nate from Sub_urban Riot. I’ve loved Nate’s styles for a while my first blog post on Sub_urban Riot was November 22, 2014.

Screen shot 2016-03-08 at 10.02.30 AM

QUESTION 1

Nate, love how Sub_urban Riot was founded on the belief that if you want something . . . then make it. What was the first design and when did the Kale design come out? I first got interested in Kale when I heard how great it was for bones – strong bones in skateboarding – very important. But I’m not too big a vegetable eater – kale chips count – do you eat your Kale or just hope to eat your Kale? And congrats on Beyonce being a Sub_urban Riot lover.

Screen shot 2016-03-08 at 10.04.54 AM

We actually started 10 years ago. Our fist couple tee designs were of bats, ice cream cones, and bunnies. Since it’s our 10yr anniversary, we may release a couple of the originals this year.

I always eat my kale. I have to now because I’m old. I put it in my smoothies every morning and yes… kale chips too. My wife makes them for us.

QUESTION 2

The Good Vibes comes in unisex – is that because the reminder of Good Vibes helps everyone not just the wearer keep it positive?

Screen shot 2016-03-08 at 10.06.16 AM

I like where you’re going with that. But our motivation was simpler. We love unisex styling. That being said, we are entering an era of unparalleled equality… lots of work to still be done, but lots of barriers being removed at the same time.

QUESTION 3

My favorite is Brunch or Die loose tee because I believe in food and sleep so brunch is the way to go. What’s your favorite tee & why?

Screen shot 2016-03-08 at 10.07.34 AM

Eat well, sleep for 8 hours a day, and good things will happen. My personal fav right now is QUINOA PHOENIX, or MERCURY IS IN RETROGRADE

Screen shot 2016-03-08 at 10.12.10 AM

QUESTION 4

Love the Canada Dreaming tee. I’m a huge fan of Canada most of the February blog posts were on Canadian skater girls – what do you dream of in Canada?

Screen shot 2016-03-08 at 10.13.37 AM

I envy our neighbors to the north. Cool cities, breathtaking outdoors, and free healthcare.

QUESTION 5

And Thank You for saying browsing isn’t stalking. What’s the best place for people to browse all your clothes – the internet or ??? I love how you’re always on display at my local Nordstroms.

Screen shot 2016-03-08 at 10.15.33 AM

Thanks Nate for your designs that keep it playful and connecting with your customers. I appreciate the subtle reminders to not take my life so seriously and the reminders that change (a riot) can start with me.

Reader tip if you haven’t checked out Sub_urban Riot on-line do it now & you might get a discount & for sure get updates on everything new.

And follow them on Instagram & please tag them & me to show how you’re keeping it stylish on & off the board in Sub_urban Riot.

Last Canadian Skater Girl

Screen shot 2016-02-26 at 10.02.35 AM

This is little V and she’s our last picture of Canadian Skater Girls in February but for sure she is not the last skater girl in Canada.  Photo sublimelimes.

Thanks to all the girls who keep sharing their skateboarding pictures and show the world – girls can skateboard – keep it fun & fashionable!

Happy Leap Year.

Do You Remember the Mother Who Wrote the Thank You Letter to a Skater Boy?

Screen shot 2016-02-16 at 1.43.18 PM

A mother has written a heartwarming Facebook message to thank a teenage boy for helping her daughter learn how to skateboard – despite getting teased by his friends.

Jeanean Thomas, from Cambridge, Ontario, told how her six-year-old daughter Peyton had been wanting to skate for months but was terrified because she thought it was ‘ only for boys’.

Thomas, 29, said she convinced Peyton to go to a skate park after explaining there was ‘no such thing as “girl things” and “boy things”‘, but when the pair arrived the place was full of teenage boys. – Daily Mail

If you don’t remember or haven’t read it please follow the link – it’s a wonderful story that shows that skateboarding isn’t for boys or girls and that “real” skaters want to share skateboarding.

Why am I blogging about this in February – go Canada Peyton is a Canadian skater girl.  Below a shot from Jeaneanthomas IG.

Thanks Jeanean for encouraging your daughter and teaching her that it’s ok to ask for help and let others help you – we all grow when we help each other!
