Jackalopes are real – Happy Easter

I love Canada and soon it will be  Jackalope time  in Montreal – August 19- 21st.

Screen shot 2016-02-28 at 1.24.27 PM

Jackalope is just one of the many events that World Cup Skateboarding organizes.  Below is my  interview with Don Bostick President of World Cup Skateboarding since 1993.

SF:  I’ve heard people say skateboarding is a fad – goes up & down in popularity.  Is that what you’ve seen in the last 20 plus years?  And if so why does that happen?

Don:  Back in the early days and I mean the early days of the 60’s when I started skateboarding, it was often referred to as a fad. It appeared and disappeared as most fads do overnight. However, for the past 40 years, skateboarding has enjoyed good and bad times in a roller coaster type of fashion. About every 10 years, things are good with companies thriving and the number of skateboarders go up. Then for different reasons, business slows down and the number of skaters fall off. Basically, kids grow up and discover girls, driving owning a car and getting a job, etc. – life changes.. However, the big difference in the last 10 years is the number of returning skaters! Check out the skateparks and it’s become a family thing now. So many dads and moms are skating with their kids; boys and girls. The other difference is the influence of long boarding, cruising and just skating for transportation.

Because of all the TV exposure skateboarding has received in the past 20 years via the X Games, Gravity Games, Dew Tour, Street League, MTV Sports Festival, Vans Triple Crown, and more, new skaters have been drawn into skating that might not have been by just the skate media, etc. Then add in social media, skating is everywhere world wide!

SF:  Overall do you think there’s been a steady increase in the number of girls skateboarding even if the total number of skaters has decreased?

Just based on what I’ve seen around the world, the number of girls skateboarding is definitely on the rise. Pre teens, teens, mature girls and even older moms are out there doing it. Girls of all ages are really enjoying skateboarding. They are also enjoying all the different forms of skateboarding from skating the parks, the streets and cruising on longboards as well. On my trip to Colorado for the Winter Dew Tour, I saw a girl traveling with a downhill skateboard set. A totally specialized low gravity deck about 34 “ long, 10” wide, with cut outs for the 72 mm wheels, etc. She had it attached to her backpack. As an old downhiller, I thought it was super cool to see. There is so much more support for the girls, which I believe is huge help in attracting girls to skateboarding. It’s a special time in skateboarding for girls, with all the new skate companies targeting the female market and special events out there giving opportunities to the girls, like the Vans Girls Combi Pool Classic and Exposure! Thanks to all the ladies over the years paving the way, making today’s atmosphere even possible!

SF:  I see so many skate parks opening up around the world – I think that’s a good sign for the future of skateboarding – do you?

Yes, I do think it’s a good sign for the future of skateboarding. Internationally, skateparks have blown up in the past few years! I’m not sure of the number of parks around the world, but they are certain up from the number of skateparks, say 5 or 10 years ago.

The biggest deal and change is that of number of parks are free and open to the public! Here in the United States, everything changed once the liability laws changed. We’re now in tune with the rest of the world and parks are everywhere.

Parks breed new skaters and maintain older skaters, which is why they are important! With parks opening up around the world, skateboarding’s future is secured. Similar to having basketball courts for soccer fields.

SF:  If you had one wish for skateboarding – mine is to see more girls of all ages & levels skateboarding for fun – what would your wish be?

I like that! I also feel your wish is already coming true, just based what I’ve seen in recent years for the number of girls now skating around the world.

My one wish for skateboarding would be that we weren’t so fragmented as an industry and dare I say as a sport? There are so many different aspects of skateboarding. Everyone is different and what attracts them. From kick flipping down a double stair to racing downhill at 50 miles an hour to skating backyard pools, cruising the beach or making the first 1440 on the mega ramp, it’s all skateboarding! I would just like to see everyone respect each other and their style of skating! Yeah, that’s my wish!

That’s an awesome wish – what are your wishes for skateboarding?  Please keep sharing your pictures – seeing is believing – & yes Jackalope’s must be real see above & below.  Happy Easter!

Missing Girls Art Project

image2

MISSING is a public art project started by Leena Kejriwal in India.

Black silhouettes of a young girl have been painted all over Indian cites to represent dark holes into which millions of girls disappear. It’s estimated that global trafficking has 27 million people and millions of that are children. This is horrible and way too many people don’t know about it.

 image-8
MISSING or #missingirls is bringing awareness about sex trafficking in hopes people will step out to see it ended.
I found out about #missingirls at the beginning of this year and thought it was such a great idea that I made a stencil and painted it on my skateboard. I actually told my mom that some day I was going to work for and help these people, and then one month later, I was asked to be the USA ambassador. I’ve painted the stencil on other peoples skateboards at a few local skateparks and am really stoked about how much everyone gets excited about it. We also have been working towards painting it at churches and local business. I am so grateful to Aura Skateboarding and Training Facility for showing so much support and being the first place that the Missingirls stencil has been painted here in the USA!   They also have done half price admission days for anyone who get the Missingirl stencil painted on their skateboard.
image-7
In the past 3 months we’ve been able to paint the Missingirl stencil on over 30 boards! But sadly Sex trafficking isn’t the only kind of trafficking, labor trafficking is a huge part of human slavery and there are things YOU can do to help us end it! Look for the Fair Trade label. Buying fair trade chocolate, coffee, rice, clothing, soccer balls and many other items does make a Huge impact on ending trafficking. Where we put our money really does make a impact!
Also if you would like to put the Missingirl stencil on your skateboard or business or anywhere you know you can, I will email you the stencil PDF so you can make your own!
Please keep the trafficked girls and everyone who is trafficked in your thoughts and prayers!

The Passing of the Vert Ramp at the Clairemont Skate Park

Clairemont Skate Park – aka as Mission Valley YMCA aka YMCA Krause Family Skate/Bike Park – has been home to this X-Game Vert Ramp for many years.

ramp closed

Since 2006 the ramp had been available to the public.  However, it is San Diego area – so any wooden structure is like a boat – constant maintenance and eventually it needs replacement.

A new ramp is planned – it’s already onsite having come from the Dew Tour.  So once again the public will have access to skate a professional competition ramp and if you build a ramp – the pros will come to skate it.

Southern California’s largest and longest running charity event Clash at Clairemont will be on Saturday June 25th this year.  But you don’t have to wait till then to get involved.

Screen shot 2016-03-18 at 5.08.51 PM

I’ve started to document the vert replacement and I would love if you shared any pictures and stories you have from the original ramp.  I’ll be talking to Andy Macdonald and I also want to hear from tons more – your first time on it – your best trick – the day you almost – share with me what this vert ramp meant to you & why you’re excited for the new one.

Save the Date May 21st for GRO & Zoe in NYC

Zoe Herishen is a skateboarder who keeps it fun and shares the fun.  She may be small – 2nd in hot pink & young 9 – but she’s making giant plans.

Screen shot 2016-01-20 at 9.20.30 AM

Zoe works with GRO Girls Riders Organization –  the first nonprofit organization open to all females in skateboarding, snowboarding and other action sports. Lessons learned through GRO help girls not only in action sports, but also in all areas of life empowering them to be leaders of positive change.

GRO operates throughout the United States and Zoe works with the New York City Chapter.   Zoe had the idea to have a GRO event at one of her favorite parks – the Brooklyn Bike Park – which is skateboard and longboard friendly.

Screen shot 2016-01-20 at 10.08.55 AM

One of the things I love about doing this blog is seeing all the amazing skateparks around the world.  Brooklyn Bike Park doesn’t disappoint and if I had a travel budget I’d so be there on Saturday May 21st.  And of course I love seeing girls turn their dreams into reality.

I’m thrilled that Zoe thought to invite me and share the invite on this blog.

Screen shot 2016-01-20 at 10.12.42 AM

Screen shot 2016-01-20 at 10.12.32 AM

I love getting invited to all girls skateboarding events – and an invitation from a 9 year old organizer with a vision and an idea to help bring girls from both skateboarding and long boarding together, and to teach some new girls to ride too – Zoe might be the best invite yet!

I hope this is the first of many annual Chica De Mayo skateboard events.  And I hope lots of girls go, have run, and then share there pictures and stories right here – skatingfashionista.com.

Photo:  Brooklyn Bike Park Instagram    And yes the skatingfashionista believes all types of bikes and all types of skateboards can coexist and grow together – because fun is universal and it’s always stylish to COEXIST!

this event is Free /waiver required – click on the invitation above or here to go to GRO website and find out more

I’m grateful to both skater girls for sharing this and all the girls who support Skate Like A Girl Portlandempowering women & girls through skateboarding and creating an inclusive skateboarding community.  Strong girls open doors for other girls – thanks so much for sharing this glimpse into NikeSB.

Arbor Girls Gather

With an instagram bio line of for girls who choose adventure, ride fast & take chances with timeless style & grace – I love Arbor Girls.

Screen shot 2015-11-16 at 4.11.31 PM

On Sunday November 15th I headed north to the Arbor Venice showroom & headquarters where I met up for an Arbor Girls Ride Day.

Screen shot 2015-11-16 at 4.04.37 PM

Similar to the San Diego Arbor Girls Ride there was time for boardwalk/skatepark riding and then downhill.  I appreciate these gatherings because it forces me to meet new skater girls.

As the skatingfashionista on a mission to get more girls skateboarding for fun – you wouldn’t think I’d ever be shy about talking to another skater girl.  You’d be wrong.  I can write non stop my verbal skills – not so much.

It’s scary to talk to a stranger – you could be alone, they could be alone, there’s so many reasons it could be awkward.  So a lot of times I smile at other skater girls and definitely answer back but don’t quite have it to start the conversation.  An Arbor Ride Day takes the scary out because you know all the other girls are there to make friends too.

Screen shot 2015-11-18 at 9.24.29 AM

I’m not all about separation – girls skate here & boys over there.  I believe we can thrive together – just for me it’s easier to thrive after I’ve met someone in a smaller setting.

Especially when I go to a big park or contest it’s easy to feel left out if I’m the “new” girl – everybody already knows everybody and I’m not talking first so it can be a stalemate.   Thanks to Arbor taking the time to have events like this I can meet people gradually and then have friends when I go to bigger events.

Yes – I can skate alone and be happy – it’s just fun to #ridewithyourfriends so thanks to Arbor and all the other organizations that make friend finding way easier and low stress.  Oh and Arbor had prizes – this lucky girl won an Arbor Pocket Rocket.

Screen shot 2015-11-16 at 4.11.04 PM

Santa bring me an Arbor Pocket Rocket or maybe an Axis – I’ve been good and will use them for adventure (on a small hill)!

Poseiden Foundation 7th Annual Ladies Day at the Berrics

I started this blog because I believe more girls skate when they see girls skateboarding.  I also believe you can skate for fun even if you’re not a great skater and yes even if you remain true to your style.

This year I volunteered to help both EXPOSURE Skate and Poseiden Foundation – I also volunteered my mom.  My mom does not skate, she is not a fashion designer – but she is a believer in creating what you want.

My mom spent hours talking to anyone who would listen why they should have a booth or donate some product because she believes skateboarding empowers girls to chase their dreams.  Plus my mom encouraged me to go out and find other girls who skate because they love it.

One of the girls I met was Meagan Guy – I first blogged about her in May.

Screen shot 2015-11-16 at 11.29.06 AM

We stayed friends on IG so when my mom landed EXPOSURE some tickets from Luxe Travel.  Thank you Luxe.  I tagged Meagan on the contest rules.  contest

I was psyched because she won and she was coming from Florida to California for EXPOSURE 2015.  I want to stress Meagan won because of her video – my mom had nothing to do with who won – she just got the tickets donated.

After Meagan was confirmed to come – I made sure she knew the week after was the Poseiden Foundation7th Annual Ladies Day at the Berrics.  If you’re all the way from Florida stay a week to skate both events.  Her mom must be okay too – because she let her!

The crazy part is I never met Meagan – I missed her and another girl, Kori, who I was trying to meet both at EXPOSURE & the Berrics – so I guess I’m not too good with my cell phone.  What I am good at is helping other girls encourage each other and know that there is love and support for girls skateboarding.

Meagan’s story didn’t end with her trip – she really rips and made podium at both events.

win at exposure

My blog doesn’t end here either.  I am inspired more than ever to keep on my mission to get more girls skateboarding for fun and keeping it fashionable.  Not everyone can be a super shredder like Meagan – I believe she’s got some God given talent plus a dedication to practice – but any girl can gain balance & self confidence from skateboarding.  And all girls are stronger when we work together and support each other.

I snagged this picture from johnnyschillereff’s IG – it’s the group shot from Poseiden Foundation7th Annual Ladies Day at the Berrics.  And yes – I’m proud to be the one dressed a little differently – NuxUSA blue tie dye leggings – skateboarding should never be about fitting in it’s all about the balance.
