Wahines of the Waves

The Wahines of the Waves is an all girls board sports club at the University of Florida.  They strive to spread stoke, have fun, & shred on.

I love their attitude and I’m grateful blemboard hooked them up with boards.   I believe in karma so I see good things in the future for the Wahines of the Waves & blemboard.

The Wahines of the Waves surf and snowboard too – here’s a few more pictures of them skateboarding.  Keep sharing your pictures of skateboarding because more girls do skate when they see stylish girls skateboarding and we encourage each other.

Girl Scout Badge for Skateboarding???

On April 16, 2016 Silly Girl Skateboards brand ambassador, Hall-of-Famer & legend @pattimcgee, was one of the speakers and ‘instructors’ helping Girl Scouts learn to skate and perhaps earn a skateboarding merit badge – never before offered to Girl Scouts.

I was lucky enough to check out the event at Kit Carson Park in Escondido California.  Here’s some pictures and thoughts on the day.

Screen shot 2016-04-17 at 10.34.36 AM

The Girl Scouts assembled at 9am on Saturday morning & when asked if ready – look at those hands in the air – they were ready to skateboard.

Screen shot 2016-04-17 at 10.36.17 AM

The Girl Scouts had the park plus they had pro skateboarders – including Vista local Amelia Brodka, founder of EXPOSURE Skate,  to help them understand how skateboarding helps girls grow – it’s in line with the Girl Scout Mission Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Right after the Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

the Girl Scouts & volunteers headed to the skate park.  It was time to skate!

Girl Scouts like skateboarders are all ages – so from Daisies to Adult Members the scouts were represented.

Instructions were given in groups but there was still plenty of time for individual attention.

And Girl Scouts like skateboarders know it’s polite to wait your turn – no snaking.  There is enough for everyone & skateboarding teaches patience.

By the end of the session I saw what makes me smile

Girls skateboarding by their instructors and then

Screen shot 2016-04-17 at 11.05.58 AM

girls knowing they could skate on their own.

Is there handholding in skateboarding – I say yes.  And when you’re ready there’s going solo in skateboarding.

Skateboarding is not about competing, winning medals, or being sponsored.  Those are all rad things that may happen because you skateboard.  Skateboarding is about getting on that board and skating – whether you go across your driveway or down the mega ramp you’re a skateboarder.

One of the Girl Scouts I met didn’t get on a board yesterday – she wasn’t ready.  Yes – I gave her stickers – it takes courage to be your own person – do what’s right for you – don’t skate because everybody else is skateboarding – skate when you want to, how you want to, and for yourself.

Till next time XOXO – skatingfashionista & yes invite me to your skate events (thanks Silly, Amelia & Girl Scouts) – I love to attend & then blog – if I can’t make it send me your pictures & stories – because more girls skate when they see girls skate and we encourage each other!

What Skateboarding for Fun Looks Like

Skateboarding is fun alone or with a friend.  These two skaters show how fun it can be with your best friend – your four legged friend.

Above Corina_dee is cruising with Peggy.  And below karahogarty shares how Turbo takes the lead with his best friend Lana.

I started this blog and I keep blogging because more girls (people) skateboard when they see it can be fun – it’s exercise, it’s transportation, it’s time with your self and friends.

Girls Skateboarding in Cuba?

oh yes – the girls are skateboarding in Cuba

Above Amiga Skate coach Arianna is teaching more girls. To see many more rad photos check out amigoskatecuba.

And it’s not just about girls having the opportunity to skate in Cuba.  It’s amigos and amigas.  Skateboarding isn’t for boys or for girls who are like boys or bla bla bla – skateboarding is for people.

Skate for transportation – skate for exercise – skate because it’s rolling yoga – skateboard because you can and help others skate if they want to.  When skateboarding is for everyone – that’s fun – that’s stylish – that’s what I love seeing more of.

Also check out and expect more post because the next mission is June 16-23, 2016.

It Takes a Village but it Starts with 1 Person

Screen shot 2016-04-14 at 8.52.23 AM

Maggiemech shares this picture taken by imagemaven.com with the caption:

It takes a village to raise a child…. Or to teach someone how to drop in (the goal of the year)!;-) It was so great to experience all the support from the skate community! Help& advise came from many directions and so did the hi-fives and pep talks! It was awesome!! I would love for anyone to experience that feeling!

Yes – it might take a village – but it can start with just one person.  I met imagemaven aka Melene in February 2016 when I was writing about Canadian skater girls.  She has incredible photo/video skills and through those skills and her encouragement – I see a village that’s formed and growing.

What I see happening in Calgary is what I wish for the world.  Skateboarding is sport & art it’s meant to be shared – more girls do skate as they see girls skateboarding & get encouragement!

thanks imagemaven – you are 100% skater & inspirer

8010 Skate Park review by Kitty-May

The new “8010 Skatepark” recently opened in my local park of Rothwell.

I was lucky to be involved in the plans for developing the park in memory of a local skateboarder. This is the first phase of building and we can’t wait to see what will come next.  poseliketwiggy

“Rothwell skatepark has helped me learn new things and I think it is also good for riding around and things like that.I like the various sizes of the steps because I can Ollie off of them and they help me be able to get higher doing tricks.”

What I haven’t gotten to yet is writing for their blog about why it’s important to follow your passion.  Which I will because I do believe in the power of following your passion.  That I have a blog, that I help people learn to skate, that I get to review fashion, that I’m taking videos for a documentary – all miracles that happened because I followed my passion and because other people – many of whom are women encouraged me.  The blog exists because people take the time to share their pictures/stories/encouragement – positive energy/action leads to more of the same!

I encourage everyone to read the Red Shoe Movement Principles.  And stay on me about where that blog post is.  We are all stronger when we work together, encourage each other & yes hold each other accountable.
