Skating Fashionista on a mission to promote both skate boarding & fashion!

Skate Go Round

What makes a Merry-Go-Round merrier & faster?  A skater girl does.

Love this video from @poseliketwiggy!  She’s a busy mom, who always takes the times to share her and her families rolling adventures.

She’s part of the  #moxiskateteam and a member of @roller_girl_gang so she’s always inspiring others to skate.

Thanks @poseliketwiggy for sharing such fun skateboarding & roller skating videos of Kitty.

Wish I was in the UK so I could join their roller skating session.  Since getting my roller skates, I’ve been looking for some fun sessions.

Where are you having fun skateboarding & roller skating?  When you share your adventures others are inspired to try & maybe even join you!

Making Her Way Downtown

Kennady is making her way downtown.  She’s in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

Where is your skateboard taking you?  When you share your pictures and adventures you inspire more girls to try skateboarding.

Thanks for sharing Kennady – love your style on & off the board.

Sharing Skateboarding

I absolutely believe fun is meant to be shared so I love this video from Alma

My #firstborn and my #youngest were #skateboarding today ❤

I’ve been keeping up with Alma’s family adventures since she showed me Ballerinas can skate.

Alma is a mother of four in Sweden where she inspires her children and others to have fun on & off the board.

Plus she’s an artist.  Girls really can do anything they set their minds too.

Where and how are you inspiring others to be their best on & off the skateboard?  When you share your fun, you inspire others to have fun too.

Yoga for Skateboarders at Skate Rising

On May 13th, Skate Rising is returning to the Encinitas Community Skate Plaza.  In addition to skateboarding the girls will learn about health and wellness on and off the board from Nekter Juice & Yoga for Skateboarders.

I caught up with my friend Bridget, who I met through EXPOSURE Skate, to find out the scoop on Yoga for Skateboarders.

Bridget runs the yoga clinics at EXPOSURE Skate and for the 5th anniversary last year she held an EXPOSURE Skate Yoga Challenge. She’s also active with LA Girls Skate Sesh where she held a workshop on April 2nd.

How & when did Yoga for Skateboarders start?

Bridget:  Yoga for Skateboarders happened entirely as a result of my environment.

I grew up in Venice | Santa Monica, and I can’t recall a time in my childhood where I didn’t know what yoga or skateboarding was. They were present in my daily life. It wasn’t until more recently, after I became certified, that the connection happened on a deeper level. I wanted to share that feeling with all of my friends.

I had just received my first yoga certification in 2010, right after the Venice Skatepark opened. I wasn’t confident enough as an instructor to waltz into a yoga studio just yet, so whenever I was at the skatepark with my friends, I would practice teaching them, as a way to hone my skills as a new instructor. Soon i realized skateboarders make the absolute best yoga students! I learned so much just from teaching friends with different kinds of injuries, conditions, etc. Eventually we would gather near the graffiti walls for class then venture to the park to session. It started to become a regular thing and the name “Yoga for Skateboarders” stuck. Now I’ve been teaching yoga for skateboarders for 7 years and it is my favorite thing to do.

Why do you think yoga helps skateboarders?

Bridget:  For me, yoga has a very synergistic relationship with skateboarding. They have been crucial in the way I view life. Yoga has taught me how to be aware of my fears, skateboarding taught me how to face them.

Every skateboarder, athlete or human can benefit from a yoga practice. If you love skateboarding, you’re already halfway there! It has more in common with yoga than you might think. They both are more than a sport, like a form of individual self expression, they require you to be in the present moment, they teach you balance and you can practice both of them on your own or with a group of friends.

If you think of your body like a vehicle, then yoga is the process that keeps your vehicle running well and performing it’s best. Like changing the oil or rotating the tires.

The poses we do in yoga are used to check in with yourself. The pose will tell you a story about your own body; what may feel tight, what may feel sore, etc. Utilizing yoga as a tool in this way allows us to treat our bodies the way we should. Like our own best friends! Namaskate.

Thanks Bridget – can’t wait till Skate Rising on May 13th to see you!

Never Lose the Kid in You

@stephrocktower shares this video with the caption

trying longboarding (after playing frisbee) for the first time in the streets of Manila. ? Never lose the kid in you! My 11yo boyish self is sooo stoked!

Wherever you are in the world allow yourself to have fun.  Try new things even if they seem scary or childish.  Getting older isn’t an option.  Having fun is an option so go out there and enjoy life!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend of fun and smiles.  Hope you share soon how you’re having fun skating because more girls skate when they see the smiles.

Tillys 10th Annual Golf Tournament Benefiting Tilly’s Life Center

I had the opportunity to attend Tillys 10th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on May 1st at the Mission Viejo Country Club.

In addition to golf, the circus themed event had both a Silent and Live Auction. Before the auctions, I sat down with Tilly Levine, co-founder of Tillys and founder of Tilly’s Life Center, the beneficiary of the fundraiser.

There was so much going on, I have to split this into two posts.  This post will be a recap of the evening’s activities and the follow up post will be my interview with Tilly.   (link to interview)

When you go to any of the over 200 Tillys stores, you’ll see they pay attention to details.  There’s everything you need down to the smallest accessory to complete your look.  Likewise their event paid attention to details.  From the decorated golf carts above to the entire Big Top area, the details were amazing!

All the guests were invited to participate in the circus,

in addition to the props there were circus performers mingling with the crowd.  Below one of the Stilt Walkers, who had to duct as she passed the lights.

The performers also offered tips.  The video below proves that Sword Swallowing is legit.

In addition there were contortionists

and the python guy.

I’m not going to lie, the python guy had me feeling the American Horror Story – Freak Show vibe.  I am glad I gave him & Monster the python a chance.

Giving chances is what Tilly’s Life Center (TLC) is all about.  TLC wants to give every teen a chance to be happy and successful. Founded in 2012 with a mission of empowering teens with a positive mindset to face life, TLC has already positively impacted over 2,000 teens.

Being a teen has probably never been easy.  I know it’s not easy now because I am a teen.  I know first hand what it feels like to be bullied, victim blamed, and unable to defend yourself.  It feels overwhelming and without somewhere to turn it seems impossible to believe that it will pass and life will be better.

TLC offers a place to turn.  TLC partners with organizations like EL Viento, Operations Progress, AVID, Casa Youth Shelter, Big Brothers Big Sisters, University of California Irvine, local high schools, after school programs, juvenile halls, hospitals and more, to offer a free program of experiential learning, with a curriculum based on self-discovery.

Teens learn tools like journal writing, have a place to discuss their feelings, and receive support all which builds their confidence while developing compassion.

Ambassador & TLC graduate Isabella explained how journaling helps her.

Without confidence, you can’t give yourself a chance to pursue your dreams and you can’t give others a chance because you’re living in a state of fear and dread.  Both confidence and compassion are key to developing future leaders.

Building future leaders, people who contribute, is the end product of TLC.  That message was heard loud & clear under the Big Top when two TLC graduates Caris & Carlos shared how the program positively touched them.

So thank you to everyone who came out and continue to support TLC as they expand their program to empower more teens in Southern California and beyond.

The support I saw was amazing.  The golf tournament was sold out and the corporate sponsors were generous.

I especially loved the Chipping Contest and Photo Booth.

Stay tuned for my interview post with Tilly Levine.  She’s truly a Girl Boss.  Until then you can check out TLC on their web page

Videos from TLC students

and on their social media accounts like IG.

The Struggle Makes You Stronger

@ayriskina shares this picture with the caption

The struggle is real!

I love her smile.  It’s always a choice to smile through the struggle & enjoy the journey.

When I asked her why she loves to skate and thinks it’s good for girls – she said

I love skating because it gives me freedom to express myself.

The wounds, the scars ,the broken bones from skating define how strong girls can be.

Girls are strong and skateboarding makes them stronger.  Hope you share your skate pictures & story like @ayriskina

Below she’s with her skate squad & yes she’s an Arbor Girl!

Celebrating the Weather

Anni shares this picture by @qarkki – sometimes you just have to stop what you’re doing and celebrate the weather.

When you live somewhere with seasons, you can’t always skate outdoors.  So when you can, you have to go skate.  Where are you skating?  More girls skate when they see girls having fun skating.

I love how Anni explores and enjoys the weather on & off her board all over the world.

Wishing you all fabulous adventures and the courage to explore the world like Anni does.

Thanks for sharing Anni you inspire me to travel more.

Are You in for The Sheckler Foundation’s Skate for a Cause?

It’s getting close to the 8th annual Skate for a Cause.

Skate for a Cause is a family friendly event that combines a world class skate jam with a carnival. This unique skate event draws skaters of all ages and styles out for one reason…to raise money and awareness to the current Sheckler Foundation “Be the Change” project.

Everyone is welcome!  All you have to do is get to etnies Skatepark in Lake Forest California on Saturday May 6th.

Yes, admission is FREE.  Plus it’s easy to upgrade to VIP, which gets you inside the park with Ryan and the other pros.

Best of all the event benefits The Sheckler Foundation which was

established in 2008 as a way for Ryan, his family, friends and business associates to give back to the community and action sports industry they love.

The Sheckler Foundation supports causes that directly benefit and enrich the lives of children and injured action sports athletes.  For example, in round 9 of Be the Change they awarded a $10,000 grant to Adventure Club.

Below a video of the fun from last year.

Be sure to check out The Sheckler Foundation on-line at their website or on social media so you too can Be the Change.

Hope I see you at Skate for a Cause next weekend & please share your pictures & stories of the fun you have because by being part of the change you inspire others to take positive actions too.
