Alec filling in for Amelia – Day 1

Below Bridgette explaining the Day 1 pose – Cobra Pose

screen-shot-2016-10-02-at-11-41-19-am

Day 1 is Cobra Pose.

To practice this challenge pose:

-Lying on your stomach, plant your hands beneath your shoulders, elbows bent, hugging them in towards your ribcage

-Plant the tops of your feet into the ground, activating your leg muscles

-On an INHALE slowly straighten your elbows and press the ground away from you

-Lift your chest and expand through your ribcage as you engage your lower back muscles -Firm shoulder blades into your back as you relax the tops of your shoulders away from your jaw and relax your neck

-Pay attention to the story this pose is telling you about your body

There are also 5 yoga principles I am going to touch on each day.

Today’s #yogaprinciple is “proper fuel”

Your vehicle won’t go too far without the proper fuel. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out exactly what that is! For me, personally, it has been crucial. I happen to have severe gluten & dairy allergies that effect my immune system. So, for me, finding the proper fuel has meant avoiding these fun foods, unfortunately!  But this principle also applies on a much more basic level, like simply making sure you are drinking enough water every day!

Honor your body by what you choose to fuel it with

DAY 2 – Challenge

screen-shot-2016-10-03-at-9-10-02-am

Sarah Thompson aka sarashreds demonstrates the Downward Dog Pose

To practice this challenge pose:

-Begin on your hands & knees in a quadraped position

-Stack shoulders over elbows and elbows over the creases of your wrists

-Press the ground away from you as you hug your shoulder blades into your back

-Curl your toes under as you lift your hips up & back

-Hands about shoulder distance apart, feet about hip distance apart

-Relax through the back of your neck

-Release heels towards the ground (they do not have to touch the ground)

-You always have the option of bending your knees slightly to relieve tension in the hamstrings

The yoga principle today is “proper action”

Yesterday I talked about how I fuel my vehicle, today I want to talk about how I TREAT my vehicle. I know that activities I love, like skateboarding, are really good for my body. It cultivates strength, allows for self expression and it makes me happy! However, the flip side of this is that every action has a re-action. Activity can hurt. For me, yoga is a perfect way to maintain my vehicle, just like getting the oil changed in a car or rotating the tires. Yoga matches the strength & endurance of skateboarding with flexibility & rejuvenation. It’s all about balance! Play hard, but heal harder 🙏 #Namaskate – Bridgete

DAY 3 – Challenge

screen-shot-2016-10-04-at-11-45-49-am

Jake Golden & I with the Tree Pose & yoga principle positive thinking – Buddah says “What you think, you become”

To practice this challenge pose:

-Stand up straight, stack all your joints; shoulders over hips, hips over knees, etc.

-Big toes touching, heels slightly apart

-Start to shift your bodies weight into one of your legs, and out of the other (you will eventually switch and do both sides)

-Firm down into the ground through your standing leg

-Externally rotate your lifted leg out to your side as you bend your knee

-First, bring the bottom of the foot on your lifted leg, to the inside of the calf muscle on your standing leg

-If you are comfortable you can try to bring the bottom of the foot on your lifted leg to the inside of the thigh on your standing leg

-Bring your hands together to your heart’s center or stretch them above your head like branches of a tree

The yoga principle today is “positive thinking”

Positive thinking doesn’t just mean being happy. To me it means finding contentment even when things in life are not going so well.

Everyone has different struggles. Positive thinking helps you to realize that your struggle is not your identity. It is not who you are.

Things happen, we learn, we grow, the sun rises and sets and so on. It only benefits you to see the positive in any situation life may throw your way!!! – Bridgete

DAY 4 – Challenge

screen-shot-2016-10-05-at-10-19-29-am

Deer Earth with Seated Twist

To practice this challenge pose:

-Sit in any comfortable cross-legged position

-Root through your sit bones, stabilizing your pelvis

-Inhale as you lift through the crown of your head

-Exhale as you twist from the center of your spine toward your right, looking over your right shoulder

-Place your left arm on the outside of your right leg

-Continue to create space in your spine with each breath

The yoga principle today is “proper breathing”

If your body is the vehicle, then your breath is the engine. You are not going very far without it. When you are focused and breathing you use a much greater amount of your lungs’ capacity, saturating your circulatory system with oxygen. This aids in cell turnover and overall rejuvenation in your entire body. – Bridgete

MomIsMyName_5509 shares this Updog for @exposureskate yoga challenge in my fave boardshorts. For myself yoga helps with my balance and flexibility, which I’ve been extremely grateful for at the skatepark. When my board rolled out from under me one day, one foot stayed on the board and I ended up doing the splits. Had I not been flexible from my yoga stretches I could have very well hurt myself, but no harm was done and skating resumed. Good times.

To me skateboarding is rolling yoga so I hope to see lots of people participate in the challenge & at the Clinic – till then keep it stylish on & off the board!

Ballerinas on Wheels

Alma shares this from Sweden

Hey!
Ella Kennedy from Sweden, age 11. Who said skateboarding and
ballet didn’t go together 😉 We worked hard to get girls
skate going in Karlstad Sweden. We went from 4 girls to 30
during the autumn. We are mighty proud over this ☺️
Peace
Alma

Where is Karlstad?

Screen shot 2016-04-18 at 8.59.30 AM

According to the web, Karlstad is about 8,800 km from San Diego (where I am).  That I got an email from Sweden to let me know more girls are skateboarding there – fabulous.  More girls skate when they see girls skateboarding and we encourage each other.

Do ballet and skateboarding work together?  Yes – skateboarding is sport and art – adding your ballet, yoga, who you are into your skateboarding is what makes watching skateboarding beautiful and skating fun.

Thanks Alma & Ella for sharing.  And thanks for your patience – they first shared in January, by now there’s more girls skateboarding in Sweden & Happy Belated Birthday to Ella who is now 12!

Girls Skateboarding in Cuba?

And it’s not just about girls having the opportunity to skate in Cuba.  It’s amigos and amigas.  Skateboarding isn’t for boys or for girls who are like boys or bla bla bla – skateboarding is for people.

Skate for transportation – skate for exercise – skate because it’s rolling yoga – skateboard because you can and help others skate if they want to.  When skateboarding is for everyone – that’s fun – that’s stylish – that’s what I love seeing more of.

Also check out and expect more post because the next mission is June 16-23, 2016.

I think of skateboarding as rolling yoga – so I love pictures of meditating on your board.  I also love this picture from saydegar in Play Zurriola because it shows that more girls skateboard when they see stylish girls skateboarding.  And skateboarding is good for girls because it increases self-confidence of the body, mind, and soul.

On December 9th the blog featured saydegar and now we are featuring her princess.   Thanks saydegar for inspiring our youth.

Rolling Yoga

Screen shot 2015-11-24 at 4.16.43 PM

People feel the need to debate me on my belief that skateboarding is rolling yoga.  Does a skateboard roll?  Does it take balance to ride a skateboard?  Pictures don’t lie – thanks Nele for sharing this awesome sunset picture in Germany.

Oh – and can you wear yoga pants skateboarding?  Of course or jeans – if you have style you can wear stylish clothing.  As for yoga pants not being safe for skateboarding.

I don’t remember ever writing or saying skateboarding was safe.  Life itself is not “safe” and full of fears.

So put your yoga pants on and live!

Practice Nuxology Both On & Off the Skateboard

Screen shot 2015-08-31 at 5.03.45 PM

I found out about Nux USA from my mom.  She handed me a business card where the job description said In-House Sales Diva and said “You two might have some things in common.”  I was intrigued so I investigated – the following is what I learned from Christina Jones – the In-House Sales Diva herself and Malek S. Neman founder & CEO of Nux – activewear for inspired living.

Screen shot 2015-08-31 at 4.46.18 PM

SF:  I love Nuxology – who came up with that and was it before or after the clothes?

MSN:  I have always been a “seeker”.  Along the way, in my life as a seeker, I have learned many things from masters, teachers, wise friends and my travels.  NUXOLOGY is an blend of such learnings that I try to apply to my life and that I think applies to our work.

SF:  What’s your role and how long have you been there?

MSN:  I am the CEO of NUX and started the company in 2007.

SF:  At NUX, we measure our success by the inspiration we are able to
evoke.  I loved reading that on the webpage.   How do you hear back from customers success & how do you share that?

MSN:  We  have open social media channels of communication (such as Instagram and facebook), where people tag us wearing our clothing, hashtag NUX or NUXUSA, or send us pictures of themselves working out in our clothing.   We are always trying to improve on our communication.

Screen shot 2015-08-31 at 4.57.25 PM

SF:  Compression – what kind of compression would you recommend for skateboarding?  What kind is the one I liked based on looks?

Screen shot 2015-08-31 at 5.08.32 PM

MSN:  The V Crop Pant is Moderate Compression, which is
great for higher impact activities;   compression holds you in, and helps blood flow and perhaps is even more protective in case of a fall.   A moderate compression piece would work well for skateboarding.

SF:  Does compression lead to better performance and/or less
soreness?

MSN:  There are many compression products on the market for runners and cyclers … compression leg sleeves, compression arm sleeves,  etc.  The benefits of these pieces are well documented. We at NUX offer beautiful articles of clothing with a built in compression. So it is fashionable and functional.

SF:  Do you think wearing a compression top helps core strength?  And if so why?  I guess I’m wondering if it makes it harder to move but easier to be straight.

MSN:  I am not sure about core strength, but we have received e-mails from customers with back problems telling us that the compression tops help with their back problems.

SF:  Your offices are in LA area is that where clothes are made to or
what city/state?

MSN:  We make everything  with love in Los Angeles, California!

I appreciate Nux taking the time to answer my questions and I do recommend active wear for skateboarding because it is fashionable and functional.

It is true that you don’t see a lot of active wear clothing at the skatepark.  There was a time when you didn’t see girls at the skatepark either.

So why do I think active wear has a place at the skatepark?  I believe in smart material – material that wicks sweat so you feel dry – that’s smart.  Material that improves circulation and can lessen back pain – that’s smart. Material that doesn’t split when you move while skateboarding – that’s at least helpful if not smart!

And above all – I believe in options.  Sometimes I want to wear jeans, or skirts, or active wear, or . . . . I’m going to wear it because I want to & can.  There is no skateboarding uniform – wear what you want & wear it well.

Do you have something to recommend while skateboarding?  Send me a picture and your story – because more girls do skateboard as they see girls having fun skateboarding & staying true to their style.
