Girls Inspiring Their Moms to Skateboard

Screen shot 2016-01-12 at 1.42.28 PM

I love sharing stories about people who help other people skate.  I’ve had some posts on moms learning to skate with their kids or teaching their children but I think this is the first where the daughter is teaching the mom.

Mama_treehugger shares this photo with the caption Love skating with my girly.  Hope the rain stops soon so we can hit the concrete again.

When I followed up with her about this post she added yeah it’s great fun and she’s the best teacher!

Well I’ll go ask my mom to read this and see if she’s inspired to learn – till next time keep it stylish on & off the skateboard.

One of the best things that has happened to me this year is getting on a skateboard and enjoying skating with my kids. I figured that as I was spending so much time in skateparks just watching, I may as well join in as it looked such a fun thing to do. Maybe not the usual thing for a mum in her 30s to participate in, but what the hell. It’s made me appreciate how difficult it is, but it’s so addictive. People just walk past skateboarders in the street and don’t realise the technical complexity and creativity involved in skateboarding. I’m truly inspired by the people and friends I’ve met as well as my 2 lovely children  Mama_treehugger

AGENDA Long Beach – January 7-8, 2016

I had the pleasure to attend Agenda Long Beach on January 7-8, 2016.   And I do mean pleasure the entire event held at the Long Beach Convention center is both a skaters and fashionistas paradise. It was very fitting that the show guide had a tropical themed cover.

show guide

This was my first time at an Agenda show but Agenda shows are well established. Brands, retailers, and press have been meeting at Agenda shows since 2003. There are multiple Agenda shows – 6 in 2016 at 3 cities – Long Beach being the first.

Screen shot 2016-01-11 at 7.20.08 PM

In addition to the showroom – 250,000 square feet showing over 750 brands there are workshops. Agenda is for everyone from the serious power players to those interested in learning about lifestyle fashion. You can feel the creativity and commitment to the entrepreneurial spirit.

To feed the passionate dreamers there are workshops such as the Agenda Workshop on how to get and grow your brand and Agenda Emerge to listen to incredible motivating true stories of how success happens. I attended and learned from both. Plus for the dreamers who want experience in the industry, there’s SHMOOZ by Malakye.com to help you find a job in the industry.

The sheer number of products could make the event overwhelming, but Agenda organizes it phenomenally. Show Segments and the guide make it easy to find and see exactly what you’re interested in. I was amazed by every segment and believe me it’s hard to pick out just a few of the over 750 brands to highlight. So here we go with what caught my eye at Agenda Long Beach January 2016.

Screen shot 2016-01-11 at 7.30.52 PM

There are two entrances from registration. I believe in fate; it guided me to the door on the left. Where I was greeted by one of my favorite brands Element. I have a love for all things Element Eden. Founded by Kori Schillereff as the first legitimate girls clothing line in skateboarding it has become one of the leading women’s youth lifestyle brands.

Screen shot 2016-01-11 at 7.33.44 PM

I learn and remember through stories so the story in my head about Kori is her being somewhere like Agenda and seeing there was nothing for women. Kori filled the void with Element Eden a women’s lifestyle brand that embraces girls unique and wonderful differences.

I had a personal tour of the Element Eden side of the booth with a designer. She took the time to explain, describe, and made the experience interactive. We looked at every piece.

We started with Rain. Until I saw Rain I wasn’t very excited about it being an El Niño year. As rain puts a damper on outdoor skateboarding. The Rain collection makes it almost ok for it to rain. Let it rain, I’ll be ready with my jacket and accessories.

Screen shot 2016-01-11 at 8.56.52 PM

Concerned with the climate we looked at jackets and sweaters to stay cozy. Below are the pictures of my favorites but by no means not the only ones that got double thumbs up.

Screen shot 2016-01-11 at 9.03.34 PM

Starting on the left it’s the Canberra Beanie with the Bamby Jacket and NY Minute Dress and I support the black socks over the knees just adds something.

Next is the Canberra Beanie (this beanie will go with so much) with the Skyline Fleece, Lucky Cat Ringer Tee, and Sticker Denim.

There are several incredible sweater dresses in the collection.  This one is the Arty in Natural – Nat.  Of all my jacket/sweater picks this one could be warn alone so it’s a cost effective choice plus you could easily add leggings if the weather gets colder.  And yes you could wear it without a hat or with a beanie, but I’m loving the wool fedora and think it’s a wise investment to your wardrobe.

The final picture is the Open Eyes Sweater – I loved both versions just for a pop of color I’d go with the Wine-Win one.

Having picked our outerwear we looked at dresses. Some dresses are easier to skateboard in but if there’s a will there’s a way to skateboard in any dress. My picks for favorite dress is the Social in Black – Blk.  I love it because it can easily go to a multitude of occasions or be worn from day into night.

Screen shot 2016-01-11 at 8.58.46 PM

As for shirts and pants there were so many it would come down to fit. Unfortunately there was no fitting room. I’m just astounded at all the options – cuts, designs, fabrics, and colors. I agree that faded rose color and surplus (pale green) are colors to look to have in your wardrobe and have at least one plaid in your closet.

Next on my journey I caught up with Don Brown of Sole Technologies (etnies, éS, Emerica, Altamont, ThirtyTwo, STI Lab) in the éS booth. That’s where I saw and touched the insoles. Yes, they are as beautiful as they appear in the picture. I’m confident we’ll be seeing and talking about this insole in 2016 and beyond.

don

Now I am not giving secrets away. I can be trusted. That’s why the picture of my favorite dress from Retrolicious Brand (Folter Clothing) is only my favorite from what I can show you. There were so many others in the booth that are Top Secret. Retrolicious is a vintage inspired collection of classy and fun dresses I love the cuts, patters, and details like the collar on this one – Cool Cats. Definitely worth following them and would be super cute to wear these dresses and skate a cruiser.

retro

Another brand that caught my eye with color is SKIMP USA. Created by a team of young trendsetters in Lyon, France, SKIMP is a collection of stylish, colorful everyday accessories that have just come to America. And they come by ship not airplane because SKIMP is committed to protecting the planet and reducing pollution. Most amazing is that the products are composed of recycled materials.

Screen shot 2016-01-11 at 7.40.18 PM

There is so much thought behind their products. The buckleless SKIMP belt so security lines are a breeze and waterproof watches are just the beginning. I expect that in 2016 you will see these products carried by more retailers and of course worn by many. My favorite this purse and don’t worry if the pink gets dirty – happens when skateboarding – it’s machine washable.

skimp

As a skater I go through a lot of shoes. Even more shoes than I would as a typical fashionista. I’ve been lucky enough to try many shoe brands and at Agenda I had the privilege of meeting some of my on-line friends. As a blog writer I make a lot of on-line friends and I love the opportunity to meet these friends in person.

At Agenda I met up with Ellie Gail and Emily DeLess of Adidas Action Sports. I salute Adidas’ commitment to lead with style. Adidas is fearless when going first.   They’ve been active in skateboarding for sometime and now I’m eagerly anticipating their deeper involvement with skater girls.

Plus Adidas Women’s offers an impressive line of active wear – at the intersection of sport, street, and style. Two new pieces from the Original Line that caught my eye were the Couture Tank Top and Trefoil Crop Top. Plus I was intrigued with the track pants, which would be a new piece for me.

adidas agenda

I usually skate in jeans or leggings. A compression favorite of mine is NUXUSA because I adore their tie dye prints. I was happy to see them at Agenda with even more choices of tie dyes. Plus I loved meeting Christina Jones their in-house sales dive in person. In addition to meeting people I caught up with old friends.

nux

I was thrilled to meet up with Arbor Girl, Tara Sun Tate at the XS Helmet booth. Personally I don’t think anyone should be made to wear a helmet – it’s a personal decision and yes style choice. However, I know Tara swears by her XS Helmet and they did have an impressive selection at their booth. I was at their booth when I received an important reminder – “go to The Woods”.

tara

One of the sections at Agenda is The Woods. Each of the sections really is a show within a show. The Woods highlights the outdoors. And what is the outdoors without a fox? Probably lonely, but we don’t need to worry because Fjällräven which is Swedish for artic fox has been around since 1960 and is now going strong in USA.

Prior to Agenda, I had two Fjällräven backpacks aka kankens. I had ordered one on-line and the other was a present from Grandma – fashion sense can be inherited or developed. At Agenda I was surrounded by Fjällräven bags. It’s a powerful feeling to see and touch all that functionality, durability, and dependability.

fox

In addition to kankens they displayed many other bags and parkas that made me realize just how desperately I want to take up snowboarding. Had Agenda been earlier I could have taken a Fjällräven sleeping bag to Woodward West winter camp. I can say I left that booth wanting more Fjällräven and outdoors in my life.

I also realized at Agenda that it’s easy to add unique art to my life thanks to Society6. I was greeted by their art display in the lobby but going to their booth showed me the true uniqueness and beauty of their products.

society

When you buy a product from Society6 you are supporting artists. Each piece in the collection whether it be print, phone case, mug, or tapestry is made in partnership with an artist. And that artist is paid each time a piece is commissioned. Don’t be afraid of the pricing, it’s incredibly reasonable.

My favorite items in the collection were their new throw blankets.  Throw blankets are a favorite of mine because they are the perfect way to warm up and express yourself. Personally I wear my throws not just at home but also to school and they have the most extensive selection I’ve ever seen.

I like choices so I was extremely happy to run into Tattly Tattoos. I’ve been sporting Tattley Tattoos for over a year. I remember selecting ones like the rainbow skateboard for events like Girls Combi Classic 2015. I’m always pleased by the quality and how the tattoo continues to look amazing.

Tattly Tattoos was started by Tina Roth Eisenberg because she was tired of low quality temporary tattoos. Since 2011 Tattly Tattoos has commissioned artists plus lets clients design their own tattoos. The display at Agenda was impressive. I left wearing the blue butterflies.

tattly

Temporary tattoos are like jewelry to me. You can’t have enough and you should never wear the same pieces daily. Needless to say I was excited to be introduced to Butik Showroom. Butik Showroom is a leading women’s accessories showroom founded in August 2001 by Becky Rosenberg. They offer international and domestic accessory collections that are always current.

I loved the pieces and I loved that Butik Showroom offers emerging accessory designers a way to the next level. By having pieces in the showroom your pieces are seen by a larger audience. As a fashionista I’m often looking for that piece that will finish my look – so thrilled to have so many more options. Screen shot 2016-01-11 at 8.21.37 PM

Another introduction for me was KOMONO which means “small things”. Dreamers and designers dedicated to perfectly timed accessories, KOMONO like me is rooted in Belgium. My grandfather came from Bevern Waas and I’ve been lucky enough to visit Belgium several times.

With multiple collaborations including Happy Socks, Baloji, Andy Rementer, and Jean-Michel Basquiat there is so much to love about KOMONO. Having recently admitted needing glasses to see, I was captivated by their sunglass collection. I was impressed with their quality and would definitely switch out the lenses for prescription.

I finished my Agenda adventure at Obey Women’s. Growing up and living in Southern California I’ve always been captivated by Shepard Fairey’s iconic drawing.   And loving stories – I loved the story he shared with Agenda Emerge on how he put it up, they took it down, he put it up, he got arrested – but nothing deterred him from his mission.

Obey has an incredible amount of new shit for women (literally just look on their web page). And I’m interested to see more.

That’s a wrap for me on Agenda 2016 January Long Beach. I left inspired to expand the number of fashion posts on the skatingfashionista.com blog so I’m confident it was just my first Agenda Show.  I’m very appreciative to the Agenda Show and all the fabulous vendors who gave of their time and continue to help me on my mission of getting more girls skateboarding for fun and keeping it fashionable – more girls skateboard when they see stylish girls skateboarding!

Celebrating those Who Help Girls Skateboard

January’s theme is celebrating those who help girls skateboard.  I’m happy to say that I’m finding so many examples we’ll be celebrating past January and into February when we’re going to Canada in search of Canadian Skater Girls.

Screen shot 2016-01-10 at 5.21.19 PM

The person we’re celebrating today is not a girl – john_myhero is a boy and father who inspires and helps his daughter and her friends.

Screen shot 2016-01-10 at 5.29.15 PM

He also helps stranger the caption for the first photo:

This 14 year old girl asked me to teach her how to drop in.  A couple of falls, and a couple of jump offs later . . . I’m so stoked for her.  john_myhero

Skateboarders helping skateboarders that’s fun and stylish.  John says I’m doing my part in Dallas/Fort Worth.  I’d say from the smiles he’s doing an awesome job.  Thanks John for inspiring/teaching skater girls and then taking the time to share.

Graced by Grit – Solana Beach Strong & Fashionable

I love skateboarding because it’s both sport and art. I express myself through skateboarding and part of that expression is what I wear. Fashion can get a bum rap as being superficial.

Can wearing fashionable clothes make you a better athlete? Maybe or maybe not, but it can make you a more comfortable athlete. Truth is that materials that move with you and magically gets rid of sweat are good things.

One such good thing is a local company – Solana Beach based
GRACEDBYGRIT. Started and run by two active women who wanted high performing and flattering workout gear. I love and admire
girls who make things happen so I had to find out more about GRACEDBYGRIT. I asked Sarah Anderson, Sales Coordinator, of
GRACEDBYGRIT some questions.

Screen shot 2015-12-18 at 2.38.38 PM

SF:  I read that you hope women who wear GRACEDBYGRIT
are inspired to feel confident and motivated to be active.
What role do you think confidence and motivation play in
being a successful athlete?

When you feel confident about how you look, you perform better.  You get that extra bit of motivation to take your sport to the next
level. GRACEDBYGRIT wants you to look and feel your best while you do yoga, skateboard, run or stand up paddle.

Screen shot 2015-12-18 at 2.36.58 PM

SF:  You use fine Italian fabrics why – what are the advantages? Do you design all your clothes in Solana Beach? Are they made locally too?

GRACEDBYGRIT uses Italian fabric because this particular fabric is the only one we found that satisfies our needs for a high performance fabric.  We needed something that felt luxurious, looked amazing and flattered women.

All of our clothes are designed in Solana Beach and manufactured locally in National City an easy 20 minutes away from our GRACEDBYGRIT office and flagship store.

Screen shot 2015-12-18 at 2.45.15 PM

SF:  You can literally just wash & dry with other clothes?

Yes.  All GRACEDBYGRIT apparel can be washed in your regular washing machine with your regular clothing.
SF:  You sponsor events – I met you because of your generous donation to EXPOSURE Skate how do people find out what you’re supporting and is Family Yoga a staple event at your headquarters?

GRACEDBYGRIT sponsors yoga every Sunday and offers free run
clubs three other days of the week.  The Events Tab has a complete listing.

Screen shot 2015-12-18 at 2.44.00 PM

SF:  I see you list adventures – how can I convince you to add skateboarding to the Land options? Not just competitive skateboarding but skateboarding for stress relief and exercise. It really is rolling yoga plus cardio and there’s so many different styles from cruiser board to longboarding to vert skating etc. Have to ask because I 100% believe that more girls skateboard when they see stylish girls skateboarding – so I want to see girls skateboarding on your site.

Consider it added. GRACEDBYGRIT loves all sports; especially the gritty ones.

SF:  You have a motivational hashtag #sweatyourstory – where and how can people share their stories with you?

Social media outlets like instagram and Facebook are fabulous ways to share.  A picture that shows how each GRACEDBYGRIT gritty customer sweats their story helps build the brand message. We love
women of all shapes and sizes that do anything gritty.

We also have a blog for when women are willing to share deeper
what #sweatyourstory means to them. Feel free to contact us
at [email protected] to share on our blog.

Screen shot 2015-12-18 at 2.46.47 PM
SF:  Shopping for your product – I’m lucky to live near Solana Beach how else and where else can people find your clothes? When buying online do you ship internationally?

GRACEDBYGRIT has online store that is the easiest way to purchase if you don’t live in San Diego.   We also host trunk shows around
the country and you can find those locations on our website on the events page.

GRACEDBYGRIT always looks for gritty girls to host shows!

We are working to grow our international presence over the next year!

Screen shot 2015-12-18 at 2.34.58 PM

Thank you so much Sarah.   I really hope readers check GRACEDBYGRIT out and then tag  #SWEATyourSTORY and me so the inspiration can just continue to grow!  It would be so rad if a skating fashionista out there had a GRACEDBYGRIT trunk show!!!

XOXO

AGENDA Emerge January 2016 – How I got there & Why it Mattered

*Several pictures added after original post

Screen shot 2016-01-09 at 1.00.23 PM

When I started skateboarding in 2012 I didn’t have a female role model. I was one of three girls in the YMCA summer camp. The other two girls quit after the week. The boys were not mean to me. They just kept their distance.

jo and amanada jpg

After this post was originally published – Amanda’s mom sent in this picture from 1/12/2013.

When you’re a 10 year old girly girl it’s hard to be tight with the boys at the skate park. They just stared at my fashion choices. The other big difference was motivation. The boys wanted to push harder, go faster, jump higher – they were fearless. I am willing to fall to learn but my priority is fun.

As a result my skateboarding style is not aggressive. Many people point this out as if it’s a bad thing. It’s a choice. To me skateboarding is rolling yoga about the balance of mind, body, and soul. I don’t plan skate runs, I follow the flow of the day. If skateboarding isn’t fun, I quit skateboarding. What I never quit is being fashionable.

collage jpg

Added this photo when I added the one from 2013.  This is the collage from 2015 Instagram.

The longer I kept skateboarding, the more boys tried to help me. So I guess there’s some truth to people accepting you when they see your passion and sincerity. One of the best tips I received was from Chad Rivera to see a documentary.

Underexposed was a film made by UC student Amelia Brodka. I got to see a screening and meet the filmmaker. I was so inspired that Amelia made a film about her passion and then started a non-profit so she could create the women’s skate event she dreamed of.

I immediately became an Exposure Skate supporter.   It was inspiring to know there were other skater girls, so I wanted to skate with them. I started competing. And that’s when the differences started to show.

I did practice for contests but my focus was on what I was going to wear. I saw every contest like a red carpet event so I actively worked to create the best outfit I could. My outfit had to look good and function. Pants that split and materials that show sweat never stylish on anyone.

Thanks to social media – Instagram, LinkedIn, and company websites I connected with people who helped me get dressed to skateboard. Then I asked Dave Duncan, a known and respected skateboard announcer to announce what I was wearing rather than my tricks.

To be honest I don’t plan my runs – I have an idea of what I’m going to skate but the line isn’t set in stone. What is set is my outfit. I will always be grateful to Dave when he announced I was wearing jeans by Articles of Society and tee by Boy Meets Girl.

In the rankings I was last but my passion was ignited. From this moment I knew I needed a blog to be taken seriously. Not seriously as a skateboarder but as a skatingfashionista. A skatingfashionista is someone who skates for fun and keeps it fashionable.

I believed beyond a doubt that if I showed the world girls could skate and keep it fashionable other girls would start to skateboard for fun and keep it fashionable. I realized I did have role models they just don’t skateboard.

People like Gwen Stefani are my role models. She’s an artist with multiple passions able to make it all work together. I expanded beyond Instagram and being Jordan Beal to create the skatingfashionista.com.

The first posts are of me skateboarding – by putting myself out there by being willing to say I’m here to skateboard for fun and keep it fashionable I started meeting girls around the world who were doing the same. Inspiration feeds inspiration so the blog has continued.

The blog is always evolving. I still help EXPOSURE Skate but I focus on the Learn to Skate Clinic – because that’s my passion getting more girls skateboarding. This year I was amazed at the pros teaching with me – Neal Mims, Kenny Hoyle, Willy Santos, Alex Perelson, Chany Jeanguenin, and PLG were just a few. Seeing these pro skateboarders helping girls – some in all pink, some in skirts, some on a borrowed board for the first time – was beautiful.

I’ve found that working with charities leads to working with other charities. I didn’t even know there were skateboarders helping kids with autism – ASkate or action sports athletes volunteering at Camp Beyond the Scars to make kids feel special. I share all these ways skateboarding can be fun on the blog.

I’m always on the lookout for partnerships. I was beyond excited to partner with Paul Mitchell. Skateboarding in the pink cape to show Paul Mitchell supports all boarder girls at Super Girl was thrilling but handing out products at other events to girls that otherwise wouldn’t have PM products is rewarding – it makes me feel good. The blog let’s me share easy ways to give back like tag #givingismystyle on InstaGram and Paul Mitchell donates to charities.

I haven not yet met Gwen (who’s birthday is the same as mine 10/3) but I have met some of the most amazing people in fashion and skateboarding. People willing to help me show girls skateboarding for fun and keeping it fashionable – because seeing stylish girls skateboarding is what inspires more girls to skateboard.

And it’s good for girls to skateboard – whether it’s a cruiser, long board, in a pool, down a mountain, however they want to skate – skateboarding builds self-confidence. Plus it really is exercise – incredible core workout to stay on the board. I’m honored to ride an Arbor Skateboard because they have skateboards for every type of skateboarding plus by being an Arbor Girl I’m able to continuously meet other skater girls and keep my mind open and try new things like down hill skateboarding.

I was honored last night to hear Jon Wexler speak live at Agenda Emerge. He is the Global Director of Entertainment and Influencer Marketing at Adidas. I found out about the event because I follow @wex1200. I was so motivated to hear him speak – I ended up with a pass to Agenda so I could report on the fashion from the floor plus see him. It is so important to ask for what you want. I believe Oprah “You get in life what you have the courage to ask for.”

I haven’t written my blog post on my Agenda fashion finds – I had to write this one first. What I learned at Agenda Emerge is keep following my passions. I guess I didn’t need permission to fail – because skateboarding has taught me falling isn’t failure – but that’s what Jon Wexler gives. He shares his success and his failure to show it’s all about falling forward.

Will any of the potential partnerships I made at Agenda develop? I hope so because that will help more girls see girls skateboarding for fun and keeping it fashionable. But if not one relationship comes from Agenda I still grew and learned so much in two days.

Thanks Jon Wexler for letting me know about the event – and yes I think you know Gwen and can introduce me!

Friends Help Friends

boy teaches girl

My blog is all about more girls skating when they see stylish girls skateboarding and receiving encouragement.  Today we celebrate boys that help girls skate.

I love this picture from shawndeer99.  I love that he’s taking the time to help her plus I giggled at his caption when girls go to the skatepark for the right reasons.

I’m at the skatepark for the right reasons and if you are too – then share your pictures and stories.  Keep it stylish on & off the board by encouraging others to be their best!

Learning any new skate trick is an accomplishment – learning a new skate trick with your friends is a celebration!  And if you haven’t heard #girlscanskate and keep it stylish!

Today we are proud to celebrate the girls who are truly happy when other girls succeed.    Loved the Arborgirls New Years Post – empowered women, empower women.

Helping with Skateboarding is Fun

Screen shot 2015-12-15 at 10.11.32 AM

Today we celebrate skater girls who help at camps – whether it’s an hour or two camp or an adventure away from home like the amazing Woodward facilities.  It is super inspiring to see girls on the staff.

Hannahwaltman_ shares this group shot from Up Ward Intuition Skate Camp in Pensacola Florida.  She was a helper – I love to see more girls skateboarding and I really love to see more girls giving back through skateboarding.

Skateboarding has introduced me to so many people and taught me so many skills in addition to board skills – how has skateboarding changed your life for the better?  Why do you like encouraging others to skate?

Who else do you want to celebrate for inspiring you to skateboard?  Remember you don’t have to be a girl or even a skater to inspire girls to skateboard – my mom is a huge cheerleader who has never skateboarded.
