The first GIRLSKATE   –   Hosted by East River Skate Shop in collaboration with @femmeskate and @girlsridersorg / @gronewyorkcrew was held on Sunday, Sept. 25th in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

They planned for skateboarding, eating, music, and art so of course it was a huge success.

First up some pictures from Femme Skate Skaters promoting and supporting female skaters

All Good Deeds Make the World Better

Screen shot 2016-08-18 at 12.44.46 PM

Love that GRO – Girl Riders Organization took the time to share this rad event.   The more people who know about something – the more people who can do something & all good deeds, no matter how small – make the world a better place.  Kindness breeds kindness.

It’s easy to take going back to school for granted – there’s new clothes – new backpacks – and of course school supplies.  For many that’s not the case – getting back to school & being ready for school is a struggle.

I had the pleasure to help Skater Rising build backpacks for 20 in need on August 13th in Encinitas and I’m thrilled that more people are doing the same all over.  Hope many make it out to the House of Vans in Brooklyn on August 18th and even more check out Operation Backpack.

Thanks again GRO – love to hear how people are keeping it stylish on & off the board – hope more share their stories soon!

First GRO San Diego at Encinitas Community Park

Went to the first San Diego GRO (Girls Riders Org) on Saturday July 9th and had a blast.

Screen shot 2016-07-10 at 10.33.21 AM

I’ve always loved the events GRO puts on in other cities and I’m so thankful that @kelsaygroms & @kendra.sebelius have started a monthly Girls Skate Session at the Encinitas Community Park.  The 2nd Saturday of the month all girls – all levels including those just thinking about skateboarding are welcome to come to a free skate sesh from 10am – noon.

It is the perfect place to meet other girls interested in skateboarding. Can you learn to skate there?  Absolutely – most of the girls are more than happy to share their tips & boards.

As for ages – you know how I feel about age – let no number define you or your happiness. But if you’re wondering there was a mix of all ages and all levels.

group

What I also loved was the total inclusion – yes girls can skate with boys so there were boys – some brothers, dads, and friends who also enjoyed the park and beautiful day.  It’s a public park & public event all are welcome!

Also want to shout out thanks to Nekter Encinitas who supported the event with juice & water.  And all the donations for the free raffle – I know prizes for just showing up.

juice

I’m getting ready to go on my big European adventure but I’ll try to be back by Saturday August 13th for the next GRO San Diego Girls Sesh.   If you have any questions or need directions just let me know plus it will be posted on the upcoming recurring events page of my blog.

Below are pictures my mom took and as for why is it good to have girl skate session?   Why not?  More girls skateboard when they see stylish girls skateboarding & get encouragement so a girls skate sesh lets you see & feel the encouragement.

My Favorite Skate Pictures

My favorite skate pictures are those of people helping people!

Screen shot 2016-07-02 at 10.20.00 AM

Dianasciandra shares this picture from Lorin Farr Skate Park, with the caption   I’d like to think my best trait as a coach is looking somebody in the eye and making them believe that no matter what.. “I got you” . Believe me, I don’t necessarily know how you’re gonna deal with life’s challenges but I do know , whatever happens, “I got you”! Luckily for little Miss B, she is fiercer than she knows. Second try, no hands, Now she is free in the skate park to do what she wants. It’s all shreddy from here! Way to conquer fear today B!

Thanks to all the coaches like Diana!  And you don’t have to be some super shredder to help someone else – sometimes the best help is from your friends.  Be checking the Upcoming Events Tab on the Blog for events like

GRO Celebrating 10 Years

GROGirls Riders Organization had a birthday!

Screen shot 2016-05-26 at 9.56.15 AM

They’ve been inspiring, educating and supporting girls through action sports because they believe all girls have the potential to become confident leaders and makers of positive change.

GRO supports all girls – the caption for above picture

This is a 65 year old woman on her first day skateboarding @cocoabeachskatepark At the end of the session she sat down in the middle of the park and shook her head. When I asked her why, she said she could not believe that she had actually learned to skate and ride in a skatepark. I tell people about this woman all the time.

Mighty Mama Skate O Rama – recap of Sunday 5/8

Sunday May 8th was Mother’s Day – I celebrated in Cardiff with my mom and there were lots of girls celebrating at the Mighty Mama Skate O Rama at the Laguna Niguel Skatepark.

The annual Mother’s Day event, hosted by Skateboard Moms and Sisters of Shred, seeks to empower women through skateboarding and raise money for causes. This year, more than $4,500 in proceeds went to Community Service Programs and the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force. – OC Register

Thanks to those who went and shared here are some  highlights.

Happy to report that I am now able to drop in! Yesterday at the wood Iguana Bowl and today on cement. Awesome weekend of skating with amazing women at the MMSOR.

I love skate events like this – because everyone is welcome – women/girls age doesn’t matter in skateboarding – you’re never to young or too old to start having fun – and men/boys yes I want to skate with everyone who brings a positive vibe.  Below video 3mezagroms.

Skateboarding for fun and being able to help others – so rewarding & super stylish!

French Skater Girl living in NYC

Today we’re celebrating organizations that show the world girls can skateboard.  Showing the world is important to me because I believe more girls skateboard when they see stylish girls skateboarding.

One stylish French Skater Girl I’ve been able to see is co2vision real name Corinne Seguin.  She’s currently living in New York City.

Screen shot 2015-11-05 at 11.52.10 AM

You can see her on her IG account and the accounts of femmeskate and spacycloud.  She actually came with the spacycloud founder, Tati Kolina to EXPOSURE Skate 2015 in November – where spacycloud was a sponsor and offered a collaborative deck.

Screen shot 2016-01-28 at 10.05.14 AM

Femmeskate started as a Raquel Zerbe project to encourage and unite all female skaters by putting together a series of fashion/skate photo shoots.

Today femmeskate continues the adventure by showing females that they are not alone, impacting them to practice, to not be afraid go get out there!  Supporting fellow female skaters whether they just like to cruise or learn tricks.  As long as they’re trying and enjoy it they deserve support.

Screen shot 2016-01-28 at 10.09.42 AM

femmeskate is always working with others like my friends at gro (girls riders org) because they know empowered girls empower girls and that we all win by working together!

Screen shot 2016-01-28 at 10.20.20 AM

So huge thanks to spacycloud, EXPOSURE skate,  femmeskate, and gro for showing girls skateboarding.  And thanks Corinne for showing us girls skateboarding is global by taking your skateboard when you moved to NYC and how one girl can work with other girls to be the change they want to see.

Save the Date May 21st for GRO & Zoe in NYC

Zoe Herishen is a skateboarder who keeps it fun and shares the fun.  She may be small – 2nd in hot pink & young 9 – but she’s making giant plans.

Screen shot 2016-01-20 at 9.20.30 AM

Zoe works with GRO Girls Riders Organization –  the first nonprofit organization open to all females in skateboarding, snowboarding and other action sports. Lessons learned through GRO help girls not only in action sports, but also in all areas of life empowering them to be leaders of positive change.

GRO operates throughout the United States and Zoe works with the New York City Chapter.   Zoe had the idea to have a GRO event at one of her favorite parks – the Brooklyn Bike Park – which is skateboard and longboard friendly.

Screen shot 2016-01-20 at 10.08.55 AM

One of the things I love about doing this blog is seeing all the amazing skateparks around the world.  Brooklyn Bike Park doesn’t disappoint and if I had a travel budget I’d so be there on Saturday May 21st.  And of course I love seeing girls turn their dreams into reality.

I’m thrilled that Zoe thought to invite me and share the invite on this blog.

Screen shot 2016-01-20 at 10.12.42 AM

Screen shot 2016-01-20 at 10.12.32 AM

I love getting invited to all girls skateboarding events – and an invitation from a 9 year old organizer with a vision and an idea to help bring girls from both skateboarding and long boarding together, and to teach some new girls to ride too – Zoe might be the best invite yet!

I hope this is the first of many annual Chica De Mayo skateboard events.  And I hope lots of girls go, have run, and then share there pictures and stories right here – skatingfashionista.com.

Photo:  Brooklyn Bike Park Instagram    And yes the skatingfashionista believes all types of bikes and all types of skateboards can coexist and grow together – because fun is universal and it’s always stylish to COEXIST!

this event is Free /waiver required – click on the invitation above or here to go to GRO website and find out more
